Founded in 1920, the Chicago Bears managed to achieve quite a bit in their first century as a football team. In fact, they have more regular-season victories than any other NFL franchise in history. The franchise kicked off its existence as the Decatur Staleys in 1920, became the Chicago Staleys for the 1921 season—which they concluded by winning the APFA title—and then finally transformed into the Chicago Bears in 1922. They’ve kept that name ever since. During George Halas’ tenure as president (1921-1953), the team was consistently competitive, winning six NFL titles during that time, with only a handful of losing seasons.
Although they won a final NFL championship in 1963, the Bears mostly struggled in the post-Halas era. They came roaring back in the 1980s. The team’s 1985 Super Bowl run is easily one of the most impressive in league history, as legends like Jim McMahon and Walter Payton steamrolled the competition en route to capturing the franchise’s only Vince Lombardi Trophy to date. That was not the last of the Bears’ achievements, however; they have remained tough competitors in the years since, largely due to the efforts of top players like Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher.
