Philadelphia 76ers Throwback Jerseys
The 76ers, formerly the Syracuse Nationals, are a vital part of the league's past and future. Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, and Charles Barkley are just a handful of the legends that played on the Philadelphia 76ers team. Hall of Famers Hal Greer, Billy Cunningham, and Maurice Cheeks all earned their Hall of Fame honors with this legendary team.
The 76ers debuted in Philadelphia in 1963, with uniforms that included a circle of stars around the player's number on both the shorts and the shirt. This design became a hallmark of their uniforms for years to come. Their road jersey was dark blue with red letters and numbers.
Halfway through the 1964–65 season, the Sixers acquired Wilt Chamberlain, one of the greatest basketball players in the league. The sixers added high waistbands and long, baggy trunks to a two-toned uniform in 1965. They discontinued this style after only one season due to player dissatisfaction.
The 76ers won their second NBA title in 1966–67, led by Chamberlain and solid supporting players that featured guard Hal Greer and forward Billy Cunningham.
During their first championship season, the 76ers had a simpler design. They replaced the old star-spangled banner style with simple block letters and the distinctive 'PHILA.' Road outfits were red with blue letters and a white accent.
Since then, fans regard the Sixers as one of the best teams in NBA history. In fact, the 1966-67 Sixers were selected as the best team in NBA history as part of the NBA's 35th-anniversary celebrations in 1980.
Chamberlain was traded to the Lakers in 1968 for guard Archie Clark, forward Jerry Chambers, and center Darrall Imhoff. Cunningham and Greer's 76ers never made it further than the conference semifinals.
The 76ers improved to 34-48 in 1974-75 but finished 26 games behind the Celtics.
Before the 1976-77 season, new owner Fitz Eugene Dixon spent $6 million for the rights to ABA superstar Julius "Dr. J" Erving from the Nets. It was Erving and George McGinnis's combined average of 40 points per game that led Philadelphia to a 50-32 record. They lost the NBA Finals to the Portland Trail Blazers.
The 76ers placed second in the Atlantic Division in '78-79, behind the Bullets. They beat New Jersey in the playoffs but lost in seven games to the San Antonio Spurs in the conference semifinals.
In the 1980s, the 76ers wore their signature uniform. The road color changed back to red, and the number on the shorts was encircled by stars. The 76ers wore this jersey for more games (1,066) than any other in team history. They reintroduced it as a throwback edition in the '02-03 season.
Philadelphia returned to the NBA Finals in 1979-80, this time led by Maurice Cheeks and Bobby Jones, just acquired from the Denver Nuggets.
The Lakers defeated the 76ers 4-2 in the 1982 NBA Finals, driven by all-time leading scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Moses Malone joined the Sixers in a deal that sent Caldwell Jones and an '83 first-round draft pick back to the Rockets.
A starting five of Julius Erving, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, Andrew Toney, and Maurice Cheeks was born in 1982-83. The Sixers dominated the Eastern Conference, finishing 65-17. Malone was chosen regular-season MVP. They beat the Knicks in the first round, defeated the Bucks in five games, and then swept the Lakers in four games to avenge prior Finals losses.
Beginning in 1983-84, the Sixers began a downward spiral that would persist into the 1990s.
