History of the NFL

Do you know when football became a professional sport in America? You might be surprised to learn the NFL is celebrating its centennial this year. The founding of the NFL, which was originally called the APFA (American Professional Football Association) was in 1920.
While the NFL played championship games, it was not the Super Bowl we know and love today. The Super Bowl did not come about until after the founding of the American Football League (AFL). The AFL had its own teams and played its own championship games apart from the NFL.
It wasn’t until after the NFL and ALF decide to merge the two football leagues into a single league with two divisions that paved the way for the first Super Bowl in 1967.
- Fun Fact: The first Super Bowl was not called the Super Bowl but the AFL-NFL World Championship Game.
- Fun Fact: The first Super Bowl was the only Super Bowl to not sell out.
- Fun Fact: The Miami Dolphins played the first perfect season in 1972. They are the only NFL team to have done this as of today.
