There was a time when Brett Hull was known chiefly as the son of NHL superstar Bobby Hull, but Brett's achievements on the ice eventually made it more than clear that he deserves recognition as a fantastic player in his own right. His powerful shot was legendary even during his days at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he still holds several major scoring records. Oddly, “Golden Brett” made his pro debut at the 1986 Stanley Cup Finals, playing for the Calgary Flames. After a brief stint with the AHL's Moncton Golden Flames, Hull returned to Calgary, only to be traded to the St. Louis Blues in 1988.
Hull's impeccable teamwork with Blues center Adam Oates earned the duo the nickname of "Hull and Oates." During his tenure with the Blues, Hull was a terror on the ice, leading the NHL in goals scored for three consecutive seasons. His 86 goals in 1990-91 is the best ever for anyone not named Gretzky. In 1996, he scored his 500th goal (on his way to a career total of 741), making him and Bobby Hull the only father-son combo in NHL history to achieve that feat. Brett Hull also led Team USA to a goal medal at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.
Although he departed from the Blues in 1998. Hull's career was far from over. He went on to play for two Stanley Cup champions: the 1999 Dallas Stars (for whom he scored a highly controversial deciding goal in game six) and the 2002 Detroit Red Wings. Hull was named to the NHL All-Star Game no fewer than eight times.
