The NHL’s Buffalo Sabres debuted in 1970 along with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the NBA’s Buffalo Braves. The city of Buffalo, who prior to 1970 had no professional sports teams, now had three, and such was the explosive beginning to one of the most devoted fan bases in the country.
The Buffalo Sabres’ long history has witnessed several ownership changes as well as uniform changes and has yielded three conference championships.
Buffalo Sabres Uniform History
Buffalo’s hockey team has undergone several rebrands. The Sabres colors at their debut in the 1970's were royal blue, gold and white, with the team alternating between royal blue jerseys trimmed in gold and white (worn at Home) and white jerseys trimmed with gold and blue striping (worn on the road). These jerseys remained much the same, with some slight changes, until the 1996-97 season when the Sabres moved to Marine Midland Arena and changed their colors to red, black and grey. They also changed their logo at this time.
The red, black and grey color scheme remained until the 2006-07 season when the Buffalo Sabres returned to blue, gold and white and introduced a new logo, an abstract, arc-shaped buffalo, dubbed the “buffaslug” by Sabre fans because of its lack of legs and slug-like shape. The Sabres kept the “buffaslug” logo the next season when the league switched to the Reebok Edge uniform, but the unpopular logo was scrapped in 2010, when the Buffalo Sabres returned to the original logo.
