The Flames arrived in the NHL just prior to the 1972-73 season, along with another debuting team, the New York Islanders. They were known as the Atlanta Flames back then, and they did reasonably well for an expansion team, making the playoffs in six of their eight seasons as a U.S.-based squad. But the franchise didn't really get rolling until they crossed the border and relocated to Calgary in 1980.
The newly renamed Calgary Flames, boosted by a recruitment strategy that emphasized both U.S. and European talent, became a perennial presence in the NHL postseason, and in 1986 they managed to fight their way to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time. They came up short, losing to the Canadiens, but the Flames would get their revenge. The 1989 Stanley Cup Finals was a rematch between the Flames and the Canadiens, this time ending favorably for the team from Calgary. The Flames won in six games to claim their first Stanley Cup.
The team encountered difficulty in reclaiming championship glory, however. From 1997-2003, they were shut out of the post-season altogether. They returned to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004, only to fall to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh game of a hard-fought championship series. It was during this season, by the way, when the "C of red” Calgary Flames jerseys became widely seen at the team’s home games.
With a number of conference and division championships behind them, the Flames will likely be wreaking post-season havoc once again in the very near future.
