From Boston to Atlanta: The Braves’ Early Years
As the oldest continuously active franchise in the major leagues, the Atlanta Braves are a team with a history like no other. They got their start way back in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings and went through a number of name changes over the next few decades.
They played as the Red Caps (who won the first National League game ever in 1876), the Beaneaters, the Doves, and the Rustlers before finally becoming the Atlanta Braves in 1912.
Still based out of Boston in this era, the Atlanta Braves won their first World Series championship in 1914, capping a classic season in which they went from last place on July 4th to winning the NL pennant prior to sweeping the Philadelphia Athletics in the Fall Classic.
A Move to Milwaukee and Hank Aaron’s Rise
In 1935, the legendary Babe Ruth played for the Braves in his final season as a pro. The Atlanta Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953 and stayed there until 1966. The Milwaukee Braves, who never had a losing season, won the World Series in 1957 and the NL pennant in '58. During this era, Braves power hitter Hank Aaron won two NL batting championships on his way to establishing himself as one of the best sluggers ever to play the game.
The team finally became the Atlanta Braves in 1966, bringing Aaron along with them to their new Georgia home. “Hammerin’ Hank” finally broke Babe Ruth's home run record on April 8, 1974, in one of the most famous events in MLB history. In the '90s, the Atlanta Braves turned into a baseball powerhouse, winning five NL pennants and a World Series title during this decade.
