They started out back in 1881 as an American Association team called the Cincinnati Red Stockings. In 1890, the team shortened their name to "the Reds" and made the jump to the National League, where they have remained ever since. The Cincinnati Reds’ first series title came in 1919, when they beat the Chicago White Sox squad in a best-of-nine event marred by allegations of match fixing committed by eight White Sox players (the Reds had no part in the conspiracy).
The next few decades were a period of highs and lows for the team. Serious financial problems marked this era of Reds history, although they managed to win a second World Series title in 1940. They also went through a phase (1954-1958) when they were known as the Cincinnati Redlegs.
In the ‘60s, the Reds began assembling the components of a truly legendary squad, as a number of future superstars, including Pete Rose and Johnny Bench, came on board. The Reds of the ‘70s were known as the Big Red Machine because of their unparalleled dominance of the game. During this decade, the Reds won two World Series titles and four NL pennants. The 1975 Reds, who won 108 regular-season games, are considered one of the all-time best squads ever to take the field.
The team's fifth World Series championship came in 1990. Today, they're still a major force in baseball, having won division titles in 2010 and 2012.
