Kirby Puckett’s career didn’t last as long as that of most baseball superstars, but when you’re as good as he was, you don’t need a lot of time to make your mark on the game. He made his MLB debut in 1984 with the Minnesota Twins, whom he would play for his entire career. Puckett was a strong batter from the very beginning, ending his rookie season with an impressive .296 average.
Puckett was an important part of the Twins' drive to the World Series during the 1987 season. After leading the league in hits during the regular season, Puckett racked up a .357 average during the Fall Classic as the Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. He and his Twins collected another World Series title in 1991, again with a seven-game victory, this time over the Atlanta Braves. Puckett’s game-winning home run in Game 6 is immortalized in a statue at Target Field that depicts him rounding the bases with his right fist triumphantly raised.
Following a glaucoma diagnosis in 1996, Puckett was forced to retire from baseball after 12 seasons in the major leagues. His many achievements, including six Gold Gloves, were enough to get him into the Hall of Fame in 2001 on the first ballot. Tragically, Puckett died of a stroke in 2006. He was 45 years old.
