Robin Yount was just 18 years old when he played his first MLB game, as a member of the team with whom he’d go on to spend his entire 20-year career, the Milwaukee Brewers. As the Brewers’ shortstop, he wasted no time in distinguishing himself as a talent to watch, and among his early achievements was breaking Mel Ott's decades-old record for most major league games played before age 20.
However, Yount would have to wait until the ‘80s to blossom into a truly first-rate competitor. Unquestionably his best season came in 1982: he was MLB’s #1 performer that year in hits (210), total bases (367) and slugging percentage (.578). His .331 batting average just barely fell short of securing the AL batting title as well. All that productivity made him the near-unanimous choice for AL MVP honors in 1982 (he scooped up a second plaque in 1989, as a center fielder). Yount was also a starter in the 1982 and 1983 All-Star games. No Brewer would repeat that back-to-back feat until Ryan Braun, in 2008-2011.
Yount ended his career in 1993, with 3,142 career hits. That was good enough to get him into the Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 1999.
