There is no question that Bobby Orr is one of the greatest players to ever lace up a pair of skates. Not only did he play outstandingly well, he changed the way everyone viewed the position of defenceman. A junior hockey superstar in his middle teens, he arrived in the NHL amid an unprecedented level of hype and excitement. It was fully expected that young Orr—all of 18 years old when he joined the Boston Bruins in 1966—would go on to achieve great things. And he did.
Orr earned the Calder Memorial Trophy as a rookie and quickly went about turning the Bruins into a championship team. With Orr, the Bruins made the playoffs in 1968, marking their first post-season appearance since 1959. But the biggest season in Orr's career came in 1970. That’s when his Bruins swept the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup finals to capture the team's first NHL championship in decades. His Stanley Cup-winning goal is the subject of one of the most famous photographs in NHL history, which caught a celebratory Orr flying through the air a moment after being tripped by Noel Picard. The Bruins led by Bobby Orr won a second NHL championship in 1972 by defeating the New York Rangers in 6 games.
Plagued by injuries from early in his career, Orr was forced to retire in 1978. He was only 30 years old. The following year, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
