When Sidney Crosby was picked first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, every hockey fan expected amazing things out of “Sid the Kid” from Halifax. He certainly didn’t disappoint anyone. After his first season, he was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team, and after his second, he nabbed the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top point scorer (making him the youngest ever to earn that particular honor). He was still a teenager (age 19) when the Penguins named him team captain in May 2007.
The best days were still to come for Crosby, however. After leading his Penguins to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008, he was forced to settle for runner-up honors when the Detroit Red Wings took the series four games to two. Sweet revenge came just a year later. The 2009 Finals turned out to be a rematch between the two teams, and the Penguins didn’t let the opportunity slip away—they beat the Red Wings in seven games. Crosby went on to collect his second and third NHL titles by leading the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cup wins in 2016 and 2017.
In addition to his NHL duties, Crosby has also represented Canada in international competitions, racking up a nice collection of medals that includes two Olympic golds (2010 & 2014). His medal-winning goal at the 2010 Olympic Games has already achieved legendary status.
