The Chicago Blackhawks got their start back in 1926, under the ownership of “Major” Frederick McLaughlin, a WWI vet who named the team after the "Blackhawk Division" he commanded during the war. McLaughlin was known for his habit of firing coaches (one lasted only two games) and his strong preference for American players. During his tenure, the Blackhawks won two Stanley Cups (1934 & 1938).
The Blackhawks made the Stanley Cup Finals again in 1944 but lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four games. After this, the Blackhawks entered a long period of struggle. The arrival of future superstar Bobby Hull in the late ‘50s finally began to turn things around for the squad. The Blackhawks took their third Stanley Cup in 1961. But despite frequent playoff appearances, it would be a while before they would win another championship, as the team, frustratingly, lost in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1962, 1965, 1971, 1973, & 1992.
With Joel Quenneville as head coach, however, the Blackhawks experienced a dramatic resurgence, capturing the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013, & 2015.
