Early Years and Relocation
The Minnesota North Stars—later to be known as the Dallas Stars—were part of the 1967 NHL expansion that added no fewer than six franchises to the league. As the North Stars, they played 26 NHL seasons. During this time they made the Stanley Cup Finals twice (1981 and 1991) but fell short of championship glory on each occasion. Prior to the 1993–1994 season, the team relocated to Texas and officially became the Dallas Stars.
Establishing a New Home and Legacy in Dallas
The newly renamed Stars played their home games at Reunion Arena until 2001 when they moved into their current home, American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas. Interestingly, the logo on the Dallas Stars jerseys in these early years was almost identical to the North Stars’.
First Division Title in 1997
The Stars won their first division title in 1997, and two seasons later managed to battle their way into the Stanley Cup Finals. The Stars defeated the Buffalo Sabres in six games to claim their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Today, the Stars remain a frequent presence in the NHL playoffs.
