The Canadiens in the National Hockey Association
The Canadiens started out in the old National Hockey Association (NHA) back in 1909. Their debut season was fairly disastrous, concluding with a 2-10-0 record, but they improved rapidly. They captured their first Stanley Cup in 1916, toward the end of the NHA era. In 1917, the Canadiens became one of the four founding teams of the newly formed National Hockey League.
Incidentally, the Habs also hold the honor of winning the first-ever NHL game, played against the Ottawa Senators on December 19, 1917. This was the same year that saw the arrival of the distinctive “CHC” logo (which has undergone only minor alterations since) on Montreal Canadiens jerseys. Their first Stanley Cup title as an NHL team came in 1924.
The Canadiens in the National Hockey League
The Habs are responsible for three of the nine dynasty teams officially recognized by the National Hockey League: 1955-60 (five straight Stanley Cups), 1964-69 (four Stanley Cups in five seasons), and 1975-79 (four straight Stanley Cups). In the contemporary world, the Canadiens are still tough contenders, having won multiple division titles in recent years.
