Origins and Early Success
The history of the Chicago White Sox is among the most colorful in Major League Baseball. The team started their existence as the minor league Sioux City Cornhuskers, which won Western League titles in 1891 and 1894. However, their MLB history begins in 1901, when the Chicago White Stockings, as they were then called, became one of the eight original American League teams. The White Stockings went on to win the very first American League pennant of the major league era. They adopted the name “White Sox” in 1904.
World Series Triumphs and Tribulations
The White Sox won World Series titles in 1906 and 1917, but the infamous “Black Sox Scandal” that surrounded the team's loss at the 1919 series ushered in a long period of struggle. They managed to win only one more pennant (1959) in the 20th century. Nonetheless, the “Go-Go Sox” were consistently tough competitors during the '50s and '60s. The White Sox finally returned to World Series glory in 2005 with a four-game sweep of the Houston Astros.
