Based out of the Miami metropolitan area, the Florida Panthers got their start in the 1993-94 NHL season. The team's first owner was Blockbuster Video CEO Wayne Huizenga, who was also responsible for bringing the Florida (later Miami) Marlins to Major League Baseball. In these early days, the team played their home games at Miami Arena. The Panthers struggled in their initial two seasons, but their fortunes turned around dramatically in 1995-96. The Panthers not only made the playoffs but defeated the Bruins, Flyers, and the Penguins en route to their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. Unfortunately, the upstart team was swept by the Colorado Avalanche.
The Panthers have yet to make it back to the Finals, but they have enjoyed a few notable successes in recent years, including two division titles (2011–12 & 2015–16). Center Aleksander Barkov was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2019.
