As you probably know already, the Houston Astros didn't always go by that name. When the franchise joined the major leagues back in 1962, they were known as the Houston Colt .45s, after the famed single-action revolver of the Old West. The newcomers from Houston, who played their home games in the now-demolished Colt Stadium, endured all of the usual miseries that tend to afflict expansion teams in their early days. Oddly, the team lost exactly 96 games in each of their three seasons under the Colt .45s name.
The team also experienced the tragic loss of its popular relief pitcher Jim Umbricht, who died of melanoma just prior to the 1964 season. He was only 33 years old. To honor their fallen teammate, the Colt .45s retired Umbricht's number (32) and wore black armbands for the entire season. Following the 1964 season, the Colt .45s announced that they were relocating to the Astrodome and would be known henceforth as the "Astros”—bringing a brief but interesting chapter in MLB history to a close.
