The Minnesota Twins started out as one of the eight charter teams that made up the newly formed American League in 1901. For their first six decades, the team was known as the Washington Senators (sometimes the Washington Nationals), and were based out of D.C. The Senators were notorious for their chronically poor luck on the field, a reputation that even inspired a Broadway musical, Damn Yankees (1955). However, they did have some notable successes. The Senators won the 1924 World Series, as well as AL pennants in 1925 and 1933. Hall of Famer Walter Johnson spent his entire 21-year playing career with the Senators.
After the 1960 season, the team relocated to Minnesota. Now known as the Twins, they soon found success in their new home, thanks to a roster of high-performing players like Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, and Rod Carew. They captured an AL pennant in 1965, but a second World Series win would not come until 1987, with a third in 1991. Today, the Twins remain tough, respected competitors on the field.
