The New England Patriots are one of the most dominant teams in NFL history, but things weren’t always so rosy for the franchise from Massachusetts. The team’s colorful history begins in 1960, their first season in the AFL. Known as the Boston Patriots back then, they played home games at Boston University Field (now known as Nickerson Field). Prior to the 1971 season, the team relocated to the newly constructed Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough Massachusetts, inspiring them to change the name of the franchise to the geographically broader "New England" Patriots.
The Patriots made it to the playoffs three times during the '70s, but they had to wait until 1986 for their first Super Bowl appearance, when they were thrashed by the Chicago Bears 46-10. Their second Super Bowl visit, in 1997, also ended in defeat, this time to the Green Bay Packers. However, the Patriots of the 21st century turned into a true football dynamo. With Tom Brady at quarterback, the Pats won six Super Bowls in two decades. Further glories are sure to come for the Patriots.
