Gothams to Giants: The Early Dominance
Most fans of the San Francisco Giants are aware that the team got their start on the other side of the country as the New York Giants. Actually, that's not quite accurate. The team was actually founded in 1883 as the New York Gothams and officially became the Giants two years later.
The New York Giants were one of the real powerhouses in the early MLB era. They made fourteen appearances in the World Series, winning five of them (and they likely would have won another if the 1904 Series hadn't been canceled).
The New York Giants were responsible for some of the most memorable moments in baseball history. One of them came in 1951 when Bobby Thomson hit the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" to win the NL pennant for the Giants.
Another moment was Willie Mays’ incredible over-the-shoulder catch at the 1954 World Series. That play soon became immortalized as “The Catch,” and the glove that Mays wore that game is in the Hall of Fame, as is Mays himself. The history of the New York Giants ended in 1957 when the franchise relocated to San Francisco.
