There's no doubt that the Oakland Athletics have an amazing history behind them. They started off in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics, one of the eight charter franchises of the American League. Their manager in these early years was the legendary Connie Mack, who guided the team until his retirement in 1950 and set a number of still-unbroken MLB managerial records (including all-time wins) along the way. Under Mack, the Athletics won World Series titles in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and 1930.
The team played as the Kansas City Athletics from 1955 to 1967 before making the move to Oakland in ’68. The California sun seemed to have a positive effect on the A's. With a roster that included future Hall of Famers Jim "Catfish" Hunter (who pitched a perfect game on May 8, 1968) and clutch hitter Reggie Jackson, the A’s captured World Series titles three straight seasons, 1972-1974. The Oakland A’s shirts and uniforms in this era were famous for their eye-catching green and gold colors.
Although they haven't won a World Series title since 1989, the A's are still tough contenders in the AL West.
