The arrival of the San Jose Sharks in 1991 officially expanded the NHL to 22 teams. For their first two seasons, the brand-new team played at the Cow Palace in Daly City, CA and sold out the place literally every home game. They managed to battle their way into the playoffs for the first time in the 1993-94 season, which also marked their debut at the San Jose Arena (now the SAP Center at San Jose), where they have remained ever since.
The Sharks won their first division title in 2002 and a second in 2004 as they evolved into a major force in the NHL. Despite these successes, they would have to wait until 2016 for their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Sharks fought hard, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games. Nonetheless, the team remains a bunch of tough competitors who routinely end the regular season at or near the top of the Pacific Division.
