The Texas Rangers began their existence in 1961 as the Washington Senators, one of two expansion teams to join the American League that season (the other being the Los Angeles Angels). The Senators came into being after the previous Washington Senators, active from 1901 to 1960, relocated to Minnesota and renamed themselves the Twins. The early years were tough for the newly formed Senators, as they lost at least 100 games in each of their first four seasons. Legendary Hall of Famer Ted Williams managed the team from 1969 (their only winning season) to 1972.
For the '72 season, the squad relocated to Arlington, TX and became the Texas Rangers. They put up several winning seasons during this decade, and manager Billy Martin even won AL Manager of the Year honors in 1974, but the post-season remained out of reach. The Rangers would have to wait until 1996 for their first MLB playoff appearance. They went on to win AL pennants in 2010 and 2011, only to fall short in the subsequent World Series. Nonetheless, it is clear that the Rangers have evolved into a tough team that should not be underestimated.
