The history of the Washington Senators is a little more complicated than that of most MLB teams. For one thing, it helps to know which franchise you’re talking about. In the 1890s, there were two teams that played under the name “Washington Senators”— but both of them broke up prior to the formation of Major League Baseball. When people talk about the “original” Washington Senators, they’re usually referring to the franchise that was founded in 1901 as part of the American League. That franchise—which was also known as the Washington Nationals—lasted until 1960 and captured exactly one World Series championship (1924) along the way. Notable players who wore the Washington Senators jersey during this era include Harmon Killebrew.
In late 1960, the Washington Senators moved out of town and officially became the Minnesota Twins, which meant that America’s capital no longer had a local baseball team. That vacancy was soon filled by an expansion team, also given the name of Washington Senators. These Senators played their first season in 1961, ending with a dismal 61-100 record. Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of the team’s struggles. The legendary Ted Williams took over manager duties in 1969 and immediately lifted the team to their first and only winning season. Following the completion of the 1971 schedule, the Senators moved to the Lone Star State and rechristened themselves the Texas Rangers.
