Atlanta Falcons Jersey Uniforms and Team History
The Atlanta Falcons began in 1965 as an expansion team in the NFL. Their original owner, Rankin Smith Sr., was one of the most influential figures in the franchise's history. Smith was a real estate mogul and businessman who created the team and was the driving force behind building the Falcons' home stadium - the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.
The Atlanta Falcons had an up-and-down history in the early years. They had several winning seasons early on, but never quite made it to the playoffs. Through it all though, the team and its jerseys have been a fan favorite rocked by young and old. The illustrious Falcons logo is easily recognizable from coast-to-coast.
The Falcons in 1978 got its first playoff berth and went on to win an NFC West championship that year. The Falcons have since gone on to make the playoffs on several occasions, with their most successful seasons coming in 1998 and 2016 when they made it to the Super Bowl both years but unfortunately lost to the Denver Broncos (1978) and the New England Patriots (2016).
In 1978 after posting a 14-2 regular season record, including winning their last nine games, the Falcons seemed unstoppable. Their record that season was especially surprising to many because they had a 7-9 record the previous season and a 3-13 record the season before that. In Super Bowl XXXIII the Falcons started things off with a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Broncos however scored 17 consecutive points in the second quarter and Atlanta could not recover. Atlanta ended up falling to Denver by a score of 34-19.
Since their founding, the Atlanta Falcons have had some of the most iconic players in NFL history. Among those players are wide receiver Andre Rison, cornerback Deion Sanders, quarterback Brett Favre, quarterback Steve Bartkowski, and linebacker Jesse Tuggle. These players helped lead the team to its successful seasons in the 80s and early 90s.
The Atlanta Falcons' iconic jerseys have also been a major part of the team's identity. In 1965, the team's original jerseys were red and black and featured a white circle containing the team's logo. In 2003, the team unveiled a new jersey that featured a red, black, and white color scheme. The jersey also featured an altered logo with a black and red falcon in the center surrounded by a white circle. In 2011, the team unveiled an updated version of the 2003 design but with a more modern look.
The Atlanta Falcons have been one of the most successful teams in the NFL over the years. With their iconic players and jerseys, they have helped to shape the culture of the NFL and the game of football. As they continue to compete in the modern era, they will look to build on the success they have had in the past and create a legacy that will last for generations.
