The Boston Red Sox got their start back in 1901. Back in those days, though, they were known as the Boston Americans, and even then, they were a tough bunch, winning the World Series in 1903. Prior to the 1908 season, the team was officially renamed the Red Sox. They wore a jersey bearing a logo of a red sock covered with "Boston" in large white letters.
The arrival of Babe Ruth in 1914 heralded the debut of a player who would go down as one of the all time greats. With Ruth, the Red Sox won World Series titles in 1915, 1916, and 1918. But the Red Sox's fortunes changed for the worse when they traded Ruth and a number of other top players to their rivals, New York Yankees. The team would not win another World Series until the 21st century.
The Red Sox made a comeback of sorts when power hitter Ted Williams joined the squad in 1939. Williams' .406 batting average in 1941 while playing for the Red Sox marks the last time an MLB player has broken .400 in a season. He contributed heavily to the Red Sox's capture of the 1946 AL pennant, but the team fell short in the World Series, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals four games to three. The Red Sox also settled on their distinctive uniform design during the ‘40s. Although there have been various alterations made over the years, Boston Red Sox jerseys still look more or less the way they did back then.
The Red Sox remained a competitive team over the next decades, fielding several top players such as Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, and Roger Clemens to name a few. During the mid ‘70s, the Red Sox decided to replace their standard blue cap with a red cap. That's why this period in Red Sox history is known as the "Red Hat Era." In the new millennium, the Red Sox finally returned to the championship circle, winning World Series titles in 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018.
