The team known today as the Los Angeles Angels have gone through several name changes over the years. When they started out in 1961 as an expansion team, they were actually called the Los Angeles Angels, a name decided on by team owner (and legendary “singing cowboy”) Gene Autry. They officially became the California Angels during the 1965 season. The following season, the team began playing their home games at "The Big A," Angel Stadium in Anaheim, and they’ve been there ever since. The California Angels won division titles in 1979, 1982, and 1986.
In 1997, The Walt Disney Company gained ownership of the team and changed the name to the Anaheim Angels. Under this name, the team finally won a World Series title in 2002, beating the San Francisco Giants four games to three in the Fall Classic.
New ownership in 2005 meant a new name for the team: the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This era saw multiple playoff appearances for the team, which won division titles in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2014. Today, the team is generally referred to as the Los Angeles Angels.
