The Montreal Expos were the first MLB franchise located outside the US. They played out of Montreal, Quebec from 1969 to 2004, at which time they relocated to Washington D.C. and became the Washington Nationals.
The Expos were a unique team in many ways, playing for most of their years at the indoor "Olympic" stadium and even playing a portion of their 2003-2004 home games in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They embraced their french speaking fan base, bringing in a French broadcast team who, during the seventies, created a French language baseball lexicon that did not previously exist. The Montreal Expos were also known for their superb player development and their standout uniforms. Expos jerseys today have a wonderfully retro feel to them and are among the most popular throwback baseball jerseys.
Montreal Expos Jersey History
From 1969 to 1979, the Expos uniforms remained the same, with white home jerseys and powder blue away jerseys. Rather than the traditional team name or city sprawled across the front of the jersey, as seen on most baseball uniforms of the time, the front of the Expos jersey featured a logo patch on the upper left and the player’s number on the right. The Montreal Expos logo, one of the best in baseball, was dubbed the “eb logo.” It was the lowercase letters “e” and “b” which stood for “Expos Baseball,” and when fitted together, appeared to form an “M” for “Montreal.”
In 1980, the uniforms saw a slight change, with the addition of blue and red striping on the sides of the Expos jersey and pants. It wasn’t until 1992 that the Montreal Expos saw a major change to their jersey design. Now, the home Expos jersey included blue pinstripes with “Expos” across the front, while the away grey jerseys featured “Montreal” across the front.
