You could say that Cal Ripken Jr. was born to play baseball. His father served as a coach and manager in several capacities for the Baltimore Orioles organization for decades, and young Cal often accompanied his dad in his travels around the country. After a few years in the minors, Cal made his MLB debut in August 1981 with the Orioles. He soon distinguished himself as a strong hitter. He also gained notoriety as a skilled shortstop, although his large physical stature (he stood 6’4”) was at the time considered quite unusual for that position. By the time the Orioles claimed a World Series championship in 1983, it was clear that Cal Jr. was a great talent in the major leagues.
Cal Jr. accumulated a number of honors during his 21-season career, including 19 All-Star appearances, 8 Silver Slugger Awards, and two American League MVP plaques. But he's best remembered for playing an unbelievable 2,632 consecutive games, a major league record that may never be broken. Cal Ripken Jr. was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.
