There will never be another player like Babe Ruth. Everybody knows Ruth was a terror with a bat in his hands—the first true power hitter in baseball history—but what many people don’t realize is that he was an excellent pitcher as well. Both of those skills were evident soon after he made his pro debut in early 1914, with the minor-league Baltimore Orioles. In July of that year, Ruth was traded to the Boston Red Sox. He stayed with the Red Sox through the 1919 season and helped his team capture three World Series titles during that time.
In these early years, Ruth was best known for his performance as a pitcher, but he was steadily gaining recognition for his ability to hit really long home runs. He had 29 homers in his final year with the Red Sox, which was at the time a major-league record.
Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees in 1920—a deal that changed the history of baseball. As a Yankee, Ruth finally emerged as a home run king. He hit 54 in 1920, then 59 the following year (during which he also became the all-time home run leader, at age 26). In 1927, he cleared 60 over the fence, setting an MLB record that would stand for 34 years. During his tenure with the Yankees, he collected four more World Series championships (1923, 1927, 1928, & 1932) and was the key member of the team's notorious "Murderer's Row" of heavy hitters. He was among the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1936). Babe Ruth's jersey number, 3, was retired by the Yankees in 1948.
