The Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks were founded back in 1945 as a minor league team playing in the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL). In 1952, they made the jump to the Western Hockey League (WHL). This minor league version of the franchise was pretty successful, winning two PCHL championships and four WHL titles.
Bringing an NHL Team to Vancouver
After several failed attempts to bring an NHL team to Vancouver, the Canucks (along with the Buffalo Sabres) joined the National Hockey League prior to the 1970-71 season. Their first four seasons, played in the tough East Division, were quite discouraging for the new arrivals.
Things began turning around for them when they were relocated to the Smythe Division for the 1974-75 season. They made their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 1982, only to lose in four games to the New York Islanders.
The team moved to the Western Conference prior to the 1993-94 season, and, seemingly rejuvenated by the new arrangement, launched their second serious run at the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, they lost the 1994 Finals in seven games to the New York Rangers. They would have to wait until 2011 for another Finals appearance. That too ended in a seven-game defeat, this time to the Boston Bruins.
