The Edmonton Oilers didn't join the NHL until 1979, but they wasted no time in making their name famous in the sports world. They actually began in 1972 as a WHA team called the Alberta Oilers, who renamed themselves the Edmonton Oilers after only one season. In 1978, a 17-year-old centre named Wayne Gretzky joined the team. He would remain with the Oilers after the WHA merged with the NHL prior to the 1979-80 season.
The Oilers made the playoffs in their first season as an NHL team, and they went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1983 before losing to the New York Islanders in four games. They would have their revenge the following season, however. The 1984 Stanley Cup turned out to be a rematch between the two teams, this time ending in victory for the Oilers and their first NHL championship. This began an amazing run for the Oilers that saw the team capture five Stanley Cups in a seven-year period. They also won the Presidents' Trophy in each of the first two years it was awarded. Much of this success can be laid at the feet of the Great One, but the team also boasted a number of other key players, including future Hall of Famers Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, and Mark Messier.
