The Kansas City Chiefs are the 2020 Super Bowl champions. It was their first Super Bowl appearance in half a century, and they certainly made the best of the opportunity, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter to steal victory away from the San Francisco 49ers.
The team started out as the Dallas Texans of the AFL back in 1960. In 1963, they relocated to Kansas City and, no longer Texans, decided to rechristen themselves the Chiefs. They’ve been based in Kansas City ever since. Even in these early days, the Kansas City Chiefs’ jerseys displayed the team’s famed red and gold colors. They were a pretty successful franchise during the '60s, as they won three AFL championships (one as the Texans, two as the Chiefs) and had the honor of playing (and losing) in Super Bowl I. That’s when the Chiefs battled their way to a second Super Bowl appearance and trounced the Minnesota Vikings, who were heavy favorites going in, to claim the biggest prize in professional football.
The next few decades were difficult for the Chiefs. Things improved during the Marty Schottenheimer era (1989-1998), which brought three division championships, but they had to wait until 2020 for their second Super Bowl victory. There’s no doubt, however, that the Chiefs are back.
