The franchise that is today known as the Atlanta Braves actually started their existence in Boston, where they played, under various nicknames, from 1871 to 1952. Prior to the 1953 MLB season, owner Lou Perini relocated the team to Milwaukee in hopes of boosting the team’s fortunes after several disappointing years. The strategy worked. Baseball fans in the Milwaukee area flocked to see the newly arrived squad and smashed MLB attendance records. Seemingly rejuvenated by fan excitement, the Braves won 92 games in their first season at their new headquarters, and they just kept on winning.
In the Milwaukee Braves 13-year existence (1953-65), the team never posted a losing record. Their best performance came in 1957, when they captured the World Series title with a seven-game victory over the mighty New York Yankees. They almost won back-to-back titles, but the Yankees managed to get their revenge at the 1958 World Series in another seven-game contest. Much of the Braves’ success can be laid at the feet—and bat—of legendary power hitter Hank Aaron.
The Braves moved to Atlanta before the 1966 MLB season.
