Vintage New York Jets Jerseys From Custom Throwback Jerseys

Most fans know that the New York Jets didn't start as the Jets. In 1959, they debuted at the Polo Grounds as a part of the American Football League for three seasons as the Titans of New York.

Sonny Werblin's new ownership group renamed the Titans the Jets in 1963 and changed their colors to green and white. In 1964, the franchise moved to Shea Stadium, and in 1984, to the Meadowlands Sports Complex. 

Originally, NY Jets jerseys featured green jerseys and green stripes, with white player numbers on the front and back of the jersey. The sleeves were white on top, with green numbers on the sleeves, and single green stripes set above and below each sleeve number.

They wore white pants with two green stripes down the leg, separated by a white stripe. The socks were white with green stripes on the top, and alternated between green and white stripes below.

During the 1968-69 season, the Jets reached the playoffs for the first time. In the AFL championship game, they defeated the Oakland Raiders 27-23. 

Under the guidance of Coach Weeb Ewbank and star quarterback Joe Namath, the Jets excelled and shocked the entire sports world by defeating the Baltimore Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III , the Colts were favored to win by a large margin. 

In 1969, New York won its second AFL East title, but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs. They didn't win a divisional title for the next 12 seasons.

After the NFL and AFL merged in 1970, the Jets' first NFL game was also the first-ever Monday Night Football game. The team lost to the Cleveland Browns 31–21.

Almost three weeks later, the Jets faced the Colts for the first time since the Super Bowl. In addition to losing the game, Namath fractured his wrist and was lost for the season. The Jets finished 4–10, their worst record in the Namath era. The team didn't have another successful season until 1981.

During the 80s and early 90s, the Jets made the playoffs on five separate occasions, in 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, and 1991. Additionally, in 1982 and again in 1986, the Jets were able to advance past the first round of the playoffs.

A strike-shortened 1982 season saw the Jets advance to the AFC championship game, where Miami defeated the Jets 14-0.

Overall, the Jets appeared in the playoffs 13 times since 1968, and in the AFC Championship four times. They have never returned to the Super Bowl, making them among the few NFL teams with only one Super Bowl win, along with the New Orleans Saints. They are also one of only four teams that have never won the AFC championship.

In addition to Coach Ewbank (1978), three Jets stand out in their careers and were selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Quarterback Joe Namath (1985), Wide Receiver Don Maynard (1987), and running back Curtis Martin (2012).
