The Pittsburgh Penguins Join the NHL
The Penguins' journey in the NHL began in 1967, when they joined the League as an expansion team. Their name is derived from “the Igloo,” the nickname of the Civic Arena, where they played in the early years.
Though the team quickly established themselves as tough competitors on the ice, qualifying for the playoffs in their third season, they had their share of rocky times in the '70s and early '80s. A bankruptcy filing in 1975 even put the team’s continued existence in doubt.
However, the team's fortunes improved with the arrival of future Hall of Famer (and future team owner) Mario Lemieux, as well as other stars like defenceman Paul Coffey and goaltender Tom Barrasso. The team won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992, and they have collected three more since. In 2010, the Penguins moved to the Consol Energy Center, which was later renamed PPG Paints Arena.
Pittsburgh Penguins Team Colors
The team changed their team colors in 1980, abandoning their blue-and-white Penguins jerseys in favor of black and gold. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ jersey logo has been altered several times over the years as well.
Some people have a preference for the old Pittsburgh Penguins blue jerseys with the old logo, while others like the modern NHL Penguins jersey. No matter which is your favorite Pittsburgh Penguins NHL jersey, you can find what you need at Custom Throwback Jerseys.
