The Pittsburgh Pirates have had their share of highs and lows since they were founded back in 1882. Joining the National League in 1887—the year that also marks the beginning of their rivalry with the Philadelphia Phillies—they soon earned a reputation as a bunch of tough competitors. They won the NL pennant in 1901, 1902, and 1903, while their first World Series title came in 1909. The Pirates claimed their second World Series championship in 1925 by beating the Washington Senators in seven games. The team returned to the Fall Classic in 1927 but lost to the New York Yankees.
The next few decades were relatively difficult for the Pirates, but they eventually nabbed a third World Series title in 1960, thanks to Bill Mazeroski's series-winning walk-off home run. With help from Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, and other top players, the Pirates evolved into a major baseball force during the '70s, winning two more World Series championships (1971 & 1979) and six East Division titles. The Pirates have yet to make it back to the Fall Classic, having experienced many setbacks over the next few decades, but in recent years they have been a frequent presence in the playoffs.
