The New York Yankees were a true powerhouse of major league baseball during the 1950's, and one of the reasons for their dominance was a center fielder named Mickey Mantle. When Mantle joined the team in 1951, it was expected that he would soon achieve great things with the Yankees. He did struggle at first, though, and briefly got sent down to play for the Kansas City Blues, the Yankees' farm team. Mantle soon rejoined the Yankees, as a right fielder, and rapidly improved his batting skills. When Joe DiMaggio retired following the 1951 season, Mantle took his position in center field and stayed there until 1965.
Mantle's best season came in 1956, when he earned a Triple Crown with 52 home runs, 130 RBIs, and a .353 batting average. Those numbers also brought him the first of three AL MVP awards.
Mantle was an amazing power hitter who was responsible for some of the longest homers in MLB history, more than a few of them travelled over 500 feet. He ended his career with 536 home runs. With a .9840 fielding percentage, he was exceptional in center field as well. And he did all this while plagued by injuries his entire career! Mantle was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.
