The New York Islanders were one of two teams (the Atlanta Flames—later the Calgary Flames—were the other) to join the NHL prior to the 1972-73 season. The team's first two seasons in the NHL involved the typical misery that expansion teams usually endure, but their fortunes soon changed. The Islanders started putting up wins, and by 1978 even ended up the regular season on top of the Campbell Conference. But the best was yet to come.
Guided by the expert hand of head coach (and future Hall of Famer) Al Arbour, the Islanders pulled off a truly legendary feat by winning four straight Stanley Cups over 1980-83. They also set an NHL record that still stands by winning 19 consecutive playoff series. The team lost only three games across four Stanley Cup Finals! It was an epic achievement, and the NHL officially recognizes the early ‘80s Islanders as one of the nine dynasty teams in league history. The Islanders almost made it five in a row when they muscled their way back to the Finals in 1984, but they fell to another dynasty, the up-and-coming Gretzky-era Edmonton Oilers, in five games.
