The Evolution of the New York Mets

The New York Mets got started in 1962, and their first season literally set the modern-day record for regular-season losses (120). Those early years were difficult ones for the Mets, as they were pretty much permanent occupants of the basement of the NL East. Then the "Miracle" happened.

The Mets’ 1969 season proved to be not only the biggest in the history of the team but also one of the most memorable in the entire annals of sport. The Mets racked up a 100–62 regular-season record, roared through the playoffs, and beat the Baltimore Orioles four games to one in the World Series to claim their first MLB championship.

It was an amazing season that relied heavily on the pitching arm of future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, who was named the Sports Illustrated "Sportsman of the Year."

World Series Appearances and New Home Field

A second World Series appearance in 1973 (losing to the Oakland Athletics) proved that the ’69 performance was no fluke. The Mets would return to the World Series in 1986 (beating the Boston Red Sox), 2000 (losing to the NY Yankees), and 2015 (losing to the Kansas City Royals). Since 2009, the Mets have played home games at Citi Field.
