History of the Philadelphia Eagles 1960s–1990s
The Eagles debuted in 1933, and although the team had tremendous success, it failed to win a Super Bowl until 2018. However, it remains one of the most successful teams in NFL history.
1960 stands out as the most memorable year for the Eagles. During their magical 1960 season, the Eagles won their first division title since 1949 and won over the hearts of Philadelphia fans. Their two Pro Bowl receivers, wide receiver Tommy McDonald and tight end Pete Retzlaff, led the way to their success.
The Eagles faced Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers on December 26th in the 1960 NFL championship game. Vince Lombardi lost his only playoff game ever to the Eagles, who defeated the Packers 17–13.
The future looked promising after their triumph. Unfortunately, the team found little success for the next decade.
A New Era with Coach Vermeil
In 1976, Dick Vermeil was hired on as head coach. Despite not seeing a winning season in 12 years, Vermeil transformed the Eagles into a playoff team in only his first three seasons.
1978 marked the first playoff appearance for the Eagles under Vermeil. One of the biggest games in Eagles history took place that year, the seminal Miracle at the Meadowlands. Ron Jaworski and Wilbert Montgomery made breakthroughs during that season as well.
Eagles' cornerback Herman Edwards recovered a Giants' fumble and ran it back for a touchdown, and the Eagles won 19–17. They went 11–5 in 1979, winning their first playoff game since 1960.
The Eagles Soar to the Super Bowl
1980 was a year of great significance for the city of Philadelphia. The Phillies won their first World Series, the Flyers and Sixers were both in the finals, and the Eagles won their first divisional title since 1960. Super Bowl XV marked the Eagles' first trip to the big game under Vermeil. Despite a great season, the Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl 27–10.
In the years following Vermeil's departure in 1982, the Eagles struggled. After Norman Braman purchased the team in 1985, he started a rebuilding program that gained traction. By 1988, the Eagles won the NFC East.
For five straight years, starting in 1988, Philadelphia won at least ten games during every regular season, primarily due to its supreme defensive performance. As a wild-card team, the Eagles made the playoffs four of those years. The Eagles used an aggressive, ball-hungry defense to finish 11–5 with 56 takeaways, 30 interceptions, and a team record of 62 quarterback sacks.
